INTERIM REGISTRATION APPLICATION

General Information

This information guide outlines the requirements for Interim Registration with the College of Physical Therapists of British Columbia (the College). The College is responsible for registering qualified applicants to practice physical therapy in British Columbia.

The College’s Registration Committee makes decisions about registration matters in accordance with the Health Professions Act and the College’s Bylaws. The role of College staff is to advise an applicant about the application process and registration requirements.

The timeframe for processing an application for approval will vary between two to six weeks, depending on the complexity of the applications.

Interim Registration

Role (Reference: College Bylaw section 32 (4)(5)(6)(7)
An interim registrant may perform physical therapy under general supervision of a physical therapist approved by the Registration Committee and upon such terms and conditions as the Registration Committee deems fit. An interim registrant may not own or operate a physical therapy practice. An interim registrant may not supervise other full, interim or limited registrants of the College. An interim registrant must not serve on the board or a committee or vote.

Length of interim registration – maximum fifteen months
Under the College’s Bylaws section 32(2) and 32(3), the Registration Committee is authorized to grant interim registration for a maximum of fifteen months. The actual length of interim registration is dependent on successful completion of examination.

Please refer to Bylaw for information.

Credentialing
Before registering with the College, all internationally-educated applicants MUST apply to the Alliance and successfully complete the Alliance’s credential review process. The Alliance evaluates the applicant’s education to determine if it is substantially equivalent to a Canadian university program in physiotherapy.

Outcome of Credentialing
Following the credentialing process, the Alliance will inform the applicant of one of the following outcomes:

  1. the applicant’s education is substantially equivalent to the education of a Canadian-educated applicant and the applicant is eligible for the PCE; or
  2. the applicant’s education is not substantially equivalent to the education of a Canadian-educated applicant, however the applicant is eligible to upgrade his or her education by successfully completing additional courses through Prior Learning and Remediation (PLAR) to become eligible for the PCE; or
  3. the applicant’s education is not substantially equivalent to the education of a Canadian-educated applicant . The applicant is required to obtain a degree from a Canadian university in order to practice physiotherapy in Canada.

Physiotherapy Competency Examination (PCE)
The PCE is comprised of two parts: The Qualifying Examination (QE) and the Physiotherapy National Examination (PNE).

For applicants who have successful credentialing, the College’s Bylaws require that an applicant must be registered in the first available sitting of both components of PCE. The Registration Committee requires written confirmation from the Alliance that an applicant is registered in first available QE and PNE.
