1. Why a self-quiz format for the Annual Self Report?
- Develops awareness of regulatory resources
- Develops understanding of ethical, legal, and professional requirements
- Encourages more interactivity, reflection and learning than long passages of text
- Supports readiness for questions in the Registrant Competence Assessment
2. What regulatory topics are covered in the Annual Self Report self quiz?
- Practice Standards
- Professional boundaries
- Communication
- Clinical records / documentation
- Consent to treatment
- CPTBC Code of Ethics
- BC Health Professions Act, Physical Therapy Regulation
- Infection control
- Privacy laws (e.g. Personal Information Protection Act, Freedom of Information & Protection of Privacy Act)
- Appropriate referral to others re: needs of patient, personal competence
3. What is an example of a self-quiz question in the Annual Self Report?
Q. How long does a physical therapist have to keep an adult patient’s clinical records? Practice Standard No. 1 – Clinical Records
Choose one of the following:
Records must be kept indefinitely.
Records must be kept for 10 years after the date of last entry.
Records must be kept for 6 years after the date of last entry.
Records must be kept for 1 year after the date of last entry.
By including the link to Practice Standard No. 1 – Clinical Records you can quickly find additional information regarding record keeping. As noted above the College cannot access your results but aggregate data may help to inform the need for additional supports/resources. For example, if a large percentage of respondents scored poorly on this question, it may indicate a need for the College to develop additional resources/ support for registrants with regards to clinical records.
4. Will the College be able to access my completed Annual Self Report?
No. The College will ONLY be notified that a registrant has completed the Annual Self Report. The College does NOT have access to Annual Self Report information from specific individual registrants, but the anonymous data will be aggregated for the analysis of trends and research purposes.
5. If I have several ‘risk factors’ to continuing competence, what does that mean?
REMEMBER, risk factors are NOT indicators of incompetence, but are potential risks to competence as a physical therapist.
As an example from a clinical context, high blood pressure, obesity, family history, and being male are general risks to heart health1, not predictors or indicators of a heart condition for a specific individual.
Identifying risks will highlight areas that may need your awareness and possibly some attention. Some risks are modifiable (e.g. lack of ongoing learning), some are not (e.g. returning to practice after a period of absence).
Risks are important factors to take note of and, where possible, modify or manage. Also important is to develop the supports to your competence that will help you modify or manage risks.
For your competence as a physical therapist, the Annual Self Report will assist you to:
- Be aware of your possible risk factors,
- Identify where you might decrease or manage your risks, and
- Identify where you might maintain or increase your supports to competence.
For your competence as a physical therapist, it is important that you:
- Be aware of your risk factors,
- Decrease or manage your risks where possible, and
- Increase your supports to competence.
